english woes

i have a dirty little secret... YOUTUBE COMMENTS

yes, i do watch videos half the time, but most of the time, i usually read the comments that members post. sometimes it gets too heated verging on slurs and curses, that a lot of comments are removed. so when my friend A forwarded me a link that had her so displeased and frothing on the mouth, well i was a little bit intrigued.

my reaction: i was amused but slightly insulted for filipino english teachers and she did apologized on tweeter (11-3-10), so let's just be graceful and accept it. http://twitter.com/cherry4eva84/status/29552747560

“First I’d like to give you my sincere apologies for what seems to be a misunderstanding.

It has come to my attention that many of you from the Philippines have posted comments protesting that i was being derisive by mimicking Filipinos when they speak English.

Therefore, in light of this matter I’d like to take this opportunity to clear the air.
In spite of what many people believe, I myself did NOT mention anything
about the Philippines or Filipino accent whilst on the TV show.
On the other hand, I recall bringing up Southeast Asia and not the Philippines and the subtitles were inserted when the show was being edited of which I was not aware of until it was aired.
The TV show where this footage was taken from was designed to amuse its audience and my sole purpose was to entertain the viewers by coming up with lighthearted stories.

Since the producer knows that i speak English he asked me if I could
share any episodes that touch upon the English language.
As we all know every country has a typical accent when its people speak English (including myself) so after giving it some thought, I came up with a few lines where I simply tried to compare different English accents: the somewhat rigid British accent and beginners in Southeast Asia whose English tends to be a little hard-edged. No pun or ridicule was intended.

As an individual who use to take English classes over the phone with a Filipino instructor, I give you my word that even the mere thought of mocking Filipinos would never cross my mind.
I cannot tell you how much Filipino fans mean to me and as much as I love them, I would in no way
hurt or upset them.

I hope I have clarified any misunderstandings and once again I am truly sorry if I inadvertently
hurt anyone’s feelings.
-i really love you, my Filipino fans.. “
now, now, i know what you're all gonna say. YOU WERE AMUSED?!?

yes, i was actually laughing at her. in mimicking filipino english teachers she just shouted to the whole world of her ignorance. poor girl. we all know for a fact that filipino english teachers has to get a series of tests and be certified for them to be able to teach, for the reason that we are not native english speakers.

well let's deal with facts: yes, uncontested i believe filipinos are the best english speakers in asia, because we have a neutral accent that can be universally understood, but not all of filipinos can speak english fluently, but at least they try. take my boss for instance, he's an englishman and he's travelled all over Asia, when he's asking directions in the streets, he usually get's "NO ENGLISH" but here in the philippines, anywhere he goes, he's given directions albeit sometimes in butchered tag-lish but he gets to his destination. does that tell us something? yes, we do try.

i once worked as an english teacher for koreans eons ago, though because i was not certified, i was just given ENGLISH CONVERSATION PRACTICE 1 & 2, and it was a fun job. i get to converse and speak about different topics all the time and most of my korean students, when they're not playing golf, are nice and respectful. so let's not generalize.

my actual worry is that most schools in the philippines uses the english language as the method for teaching, well minus the filipino subjects. i'm thankful for the nuns in my alma mater for implementing an english-speaking policy when i was in highschool, it was very helpful when i got to university and my job. but nowadays, whenever one goes anywhere in metro manila you'll hear students speaking in english even when they are not in school. that's bad. they might forget our language entirely. we should speak in our vernacular language because we are here in the philippines not in the US or UK.

my concerns may seem odd to most, but it's true, it happens to me all the time, because i've been working and speaking to english speakers 8 hours a day for the past five years, i sometimes forget some words in tagalog, that's why i make it a point to speak tagalog and even my dad's dialect when i'm out of the office.

there was this one time, i went home to the province for my mom's birthday, so i went to the grocery with my sister S to buy some ingredients so i can cook my family a feast. i completely forgot the tagalog word for black pepper. so i asked one of the clerks, "san nakalagay yung black pepper niyo?" and she answered, "doon sa dulo, number 4", so off i go with my sister to aisle 4, we were both perplexed because we just couldn't find it, so when i asked the same clerk again, to show me where it was, she accompanied me back to aisle 4 and pointed, "ayan o, peper plates" and funny enough there was a row of paper plates in rainbow colors! it may seem funny and i did have a laugh with my sister but i felt so ashamed, now whenever i go grocery shopping it always brings a smile to my face whenever i see the word Paminta in my list.

kazehaya: this memory, one day

both: will reach out to you.

i recently stumbled upon trailers of SAVING SALLY (and proudly pinoy made) i hope it gets finished somehow cause all i'm seeing in the website SAVING SALLY  is it's COMING SOON (as possible) lol!

This a very typical love story that involves a boy, a girl & monsters.

Saving Sally is a tiny independent Filipino feature film that combines actors, 2d animations, matte paintings & motion graphics. Most everything was shot on a blue screen & is currently being worked on by a small group of compositors, animators, rogue elves & rusty robots

apparently, the project was started as early as 2006 (and the actress who originally played Sally was Anna Larucea) but when the shooting was continued she wasn't available anymore, so they had to re-shoot everything again (we'll i think Rhian Ramos did a much better job) i'm absolutely delighted with that actor playing the comic book editor (the one with the eyepatch) hehehe, see (first trailer) 00:41 and 00:48, when he gushed with relish "I weep inside!" im crossing my fingers and hoping that it gets finished and will be coming as soon as possible.

i have a confession to make, for the past two weeks i've done nothing with my spare time *weeell...aside from reading manga and books, playing fb zinga games and daydreaming* but watch Disney cartoons. okay i started with the recent ones, Toystory 3, Up (which never fails to make me cry, for the first 5mins of the film), Wall-E, Meet the Robinsons, Cars, Monsters Inc, Princess and the Frog and further went down the classic lists: Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Mulan and Alladin (which i partly blame) because i stumbled upon this recording session of Brad Kane and Lea Salonga recording "A Whole New World" and it brought me back to my childhood!

and im currently loving Donnie (singing voice of Shang) Osmond's MAKE A MAN OUT OF YOU...
i love captain li shang as much as i love the three stooges (Yao, Shien-Po, and Ling) Yao is just so hilarious, esp when he said to Shang, "i'll get that arrow pretty boy and i'll do it with my shirt on!" bwahahahahah! it just leave me in stitches XD

gyabbo! Ryu Sanada *kyaa!*

great, great, great news!!! KIMI Ni TODOKE is going LIVE...set to be released  on September 2010, will be directed by Naoto Kumazawa (he also directed Rainbow Song) i can't wait!!! here are the actors who will play the lead!

 Haruma Miura + Mikako Tabe

Ryu Sanada is my new crush XD.
 Blood type: B
Birthdate: 2nd December
Sign: Sagittarius
Height: 179 cm [5'10 1/2"]
Weight: 75 kg [165 lbs]
Life philosophy: "A man of action, not words."

ryu, you can comfort me anytime :p
he's sooo funny, esp when he can't remember names!
ahhhh! give this kid some cookies!
Ryu is also member of Sawako's group of friends He is the son of a ramen shop owner, owner of Chizuru Yoshida's favorite ramen shop. He is quiet most of the time and rarely talks, but still can communicate well with Sawako, as they both don't talk much anyways. He is a close childhood friend with Chizuru and does not deny having feelings for her, such as simply smiling when Sawako asks if he and Chizuru are dating. He later confirms his love when he confesses that he likes Chizuru to Sawako. While his love is one-sided, he is very patient with Chizuru realizing that Chizuru probably won't like him in a romantic sense, at least not right away. He's more than willing to comfort Chizuru if she's depressed, though he would rather have her mad at him as he knows Chizuru can vent out her emotions better. Ryu and Kazehaya became friends when they were on the baseball team during middle school. Ryu also seems to like animals a lot; when Shota was going to walk "Maru", his adopted puppy, home with Sawako, Chizuru pulled Ryu away telling him he's going to walk with Ayane and her instead. While being pulled away from Shota's puppy, he cried out for it. In chapter 43, he casually tells Chiziru that he loves her and she reacts by saying "Don't say that so suddenly!".
this is my favorite Ryu moment in manga, when Ryu told Sawako that he only love Chizu :))) aww! <3

Yuiichi Nakamura will play Ryu Sanada in the live version!!! *woohoo!*

down down down saturdays.

it's a saturday again...well i've planted all my seeds and tickled my new pup, robbed fellow mafias, cast spells, searched treasures and fought some dragons, i figured i needed to rest FB for a while. T, came home from work around 7am and having just finished my part-time job, i figured i deserve a prize...so there i was youtubing episodes 1-14 of kimi ni todoke and while waiting for it to upload reading the manga *im falling in love with Ryu* he's just so adorably gorgeous in the silent, mysterious way XD *kyaa!* lol! im babbling now, nwei back to my flatmate T, she was going out again by 8am for band practice and she needed to hear the song the members wanted her to sing. Jason Walker's DOWN (from the series Vampire Diaries *that show disappointed me a bit, even if Ian Sommerhaulder is there! it's like having root canal and icecream at the same time, agonizingly blah but still a bit delicious)...and there i go again yada yada yada *sorry* and T discovered this duet version of Down by Rough Edge Diamond, and boy, we were both delightedly surprised, their version was way better than Jason Walkers.

what in a word?

while scrolling along my fb homepage i found this funny post:

that made me laugh so hard XD puhahahahahahahah!

im reading Kimi ni Todoke (From Me to You) by Shiina Karuho, it makes me go
*XD kya! kyaa!! kyaaa!!! kyaaaa!!! XD*
which is just so horrifying at my age.

Sawako Kuronuma, called Sadako by her classmates for her resemblance to the character Samara from 'The Ring' has always been feared and misunderstood because of her appearance. There are rumors that Sawako can see ghosts and curse people. But when her idol, the popular Kazehaya, begins talking with her, everything changes. She finds herself in a new world, making new friends and talking to different people. Sawako opens up to new people, making it easy for them to hurt her or help her.

Kazehaya *lol! XD* he's always blushing!!!
i love it when Sawako becomes Chibi-like :)
which always happens
ayano and yoshida and their funny faces :p
became great friends with sawako.
they look so good together.
can't wait for the manga to be finished!!!
i just heard from friends' that it's already made into anime, YAY!!!

RULE THE WORLD

im currently loving Take That's Rule the World...it makes me wanna dance like crazy... just watched Stardust, i just love that movie esp Robert DeNiro aka Captain Shakespeare and his fan and flashy skirts & corsets. Neil Gaiman is a genius!!!

back to Stardust, prior to the film's release, i was a bit apprehensive about Claire Danes playing Yvaine...lol! i just had a conversation with my flatmate T a few days ago, while we were watching Confessions of a Shopaholic & King Arthur, why the effin' hell did Hugh Dancy married her!!! *evil thoughts* T was so affronted on his behalf, saying he could have done better...i mean Claire Danes...come on! we all know Billy Crudup left his pregnant wife for Claire and the relationship didn't even last *home wrecker*

I first saw Hugh Dancy on Black Hawk Down (as Schmid), also on Vanity Fair (he was the Burberry dude) but didn't really got to notice him, er, well because Ewen Bremner (Nelson) was just so hysterically funny there (i love him in Trainspotting and even when he was stuttering his way into the heart of Jaime King on Pearl Harbor) that guy is just so fun to watch, and Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, Josh Hartnett, Ewan MacGregor, Charlie Hofheimer, Brendan Sexton...and let's not forget the lovely Nikolaj Coster Waldau *goodness i almost forgot how many cute guys were there* need to watch it again!!!

Trainspotting...hmmm...haven't watched that for sometime now...my sister A, is currently in love with Kevin McKidd, he played Poseidon in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief....okay, i admit he's a bit cute but who would've guess he was also Tommy (the poor schmuck who died in Trainspotting, i still blame Renton for his death) well, he does look fierce in ROME.

I'm watching The Pacific right now, though it pales a bit in comparison with Band of Brothers.
